Does the NUTP understand the correlation between poverty and large families?
Teachers want maternity leave for all children
Jun 2, 10 3:46pm
The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP), the country's biggest teachers' organisation, has called on the government to extend the maternity benefits to women bearing sixth and subsequent children.
At present the benefits were only for the first five children, its secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng said on behalf of the 160,000 members, three-quarters of whom are women.
She said the NUTP had submitted a paper to justify this to the government through the National Joint Council.
She said the government could easily afford to extend the benefits to these women as there were not many who had more than six children.
The union was also seeking to extend the maternity leave to 90 days from the present 60 days for all civil servants.
Meanwhile the National Union of Bank Employees (Nube) has collected more than 500,000 signatures to support its claim for 90 days maternity leave for private sector employees.
According to the union's general secretary J Solomon, the union hoped to collect one million signatures by Merdeka day (Aug 31).
Among the signatories so far was the prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor.
Solomon said Malaysia should adopt the 90 days maternity leave because most of its Asean neighbours like Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia were already providing such benefit to their workers.
In fact Singapore provided 112 days of maternity leave.
