EC chairperson Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said today the EC wanted to concentrate fully on ensuring a smooth general election.
“The EC does not have many staff and we don’t have the capacity to undertake both these major tasks simultaneously, namely the general election and redelineation. So, currently the EC focus is on the general election.
“If it (redelineation) is carried out, it must be completed within two years. We don’t want a situation where if we carry out the redelineation exercise, Parliament is suddenly dissolved and this will pose a problem,” he was quoted by Bernama as saying.
The redelineation exercise, which had been considered for implementation for the past two years, would only be held after the coming general election, he said.
According to Article 113 (2) of the Federal Constitution, a new redelineation exercise can be carried out eight years after the last exercise.
