    Hulu Selangor’s significance

BN candidate P Kamalanathan (left) and PKR candidate Datuk Zaid Ibrahim

HULU Selangor, the 10th by-election since national polls in March 2008, is a fight neither the Barisan Nasional (BN) nor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) can afford to lose. The BN needs to prove its sincerity about its rhetorically inclusive 1Malaysia in a seat where Chinese and Indian Malaysian voters are a sizeable 26% and 18%, respectively.

The component party which its candidate comes from, the MIC, is still struggling under the personality cult of its long-time president. On the PR side, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) lost four Members of Parliament (MPs) in recent months and an assemblyperson just last week.

As such, the more substantive campaign factors will be:

    1 The personality of PKR candidate Datuk Zaid Ibrahim;

2 The appeal of the MIC under president Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu to voters; and

3 The Selangor PR government's performance in the last two years and the federal government after one year under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. The Zaid factor

Zaid may be a new face to Hulu Selangor, but is arguably well known for quitting the cabinet on principle to protest the government's arbitrary use of the Internal Security Act. Subsequently getting sacked from Umno earned him a martyr's badge of sorts. Then becoming PKR's ideologue and crafter of the PR's common policy sealed his reputation as a democrat and champion of equality. Before politics, there was his sterling law career and active philanthropy.

The PKR political bureau and supreme council member is thus a "believable" candidate because "he's proven himself principled", says political observer Khoo Kay Peng.

"He'll have a strong chance among fence-sitters who may dislike Pakatan but also dislike the BN. His resignation from government and getting sacked from Umno jives with the sentiments of those who dislike the BN. With him, people might be willing to overlook the flaws in Pakatan," Khoo says in a phone interview.

It means that when the PR talks about justice and equity, the message can ring true for voters because they've seen Zaid sacrifice position for those principles. Zaid has a good chance, provided what Hulu Selangor voters want is a stronger opposition in Parliament. The Nut Graph....

This is how low they would go...

The Barisan Nasional, especially UMNO is devoid of any usable issue in the Hulu Selangor I suppose. It is also absolutely corrupt of any idea on how to win the heart and mind of the voters.

And so they resorted to character assassination from the word go. That, I suppose, has been their trademark. And we all have come to expect it from them.

How sad. On one hand we want to be a high-income country by whatever year. We want to be a world class country with world class infrastructure blah blah blah. But deep down inside, we are just a bunch of useless, vile, vicious and selfish animals, waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting and helpless. art harun.

Umno, MCA and MIC ran Selangor for 51 years. Over the last two years Selangor was run by Pakatan Rakyat. Can we compare 51 years of Barisan Nasional rule to two years of Pakatan Rakyat rule? Have we seen a better-run Selangor over the last two years with Pakatan Rakyat at the helm compared to 51 years of Barisan Nasional?

Re: Hulu Selangor By-election - Hulu Selangor Voters:Check your polling stations

    Calling all Hulu Selangor voters.

If you have voted in GE 12 (200 in the "2008 Polling Stations" shown below, chances are you have been shifted to another polling station shown under "2010 Polling Station". Please note that even if the 2010 Station is the same as the 2008 Station, you should check with SPR because up to 50% of the voters in some stations are shifted.

To avoid confusion on polling day, check by clicking on the spr website below to confirm your polling station:

    http://daftarj.spr.gov.my/daftarj/
Enter ic no in the box provided to access your Polling Station.

    Checking by SMS:
For sms, type: SPR SEMAK IC (No blank space. 12 continuous numbers). Send to 15888.
Eg: Type SMS message: SPR SEMAK 500102015003
    Send to 15888

SMS hotline 019 326 0874. Voters can send a text message (state ic no.) to this number to find out where their polling stations are," she said.

About 14000 voters are affected. So you have a 20% chance of being shifted. Please post here to inform the public if you are one of them.

Re: Hulu Selangor By-election - PKR wants EC board to resign over voter shift

We need an Election Supervisory Board to monitor the SPR like BAWASLU
of Indonesia. For too long, they have cheated the people of Malaysia with impunity.

PKR wants EC board to resign over voter shift
    By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 — PKR election director Fuziah Salleh today demanded the Election Commission (EC) board resign for illegally relocating 13,000 voters in Hulu Selangor.

PKR had claimed the EC allegedly relocated voting stations that will affect 13,488 voters in the Hulu Selangor federal seat which it narrowly won by 198 votes in Election 2008.

The party believes that the shift is aimed to cause chaos on the April 25 polling day when voters discover that their stations have been relocated.

The Kuantan MP said the EC’s action was “stupid, irresponsible and incompetent.” TheMalaysiaInsider....

'PKR needs to buck up on its campaign'

    Tue, 20 Apr 2010 14:53

    By Zefry Dahalan

KUALA KUBU BARU: PKR's Hulu Selangor by-election campaign machinery has come under fire from several quarters within Pakatan Rakyat for its organisational and implementation failures.

“It looks like too many people from PKR are involved and as such work is not being done effectively on the ground,” said a local Pakatan leader who refused to be named.

The by-election campaign is headed by Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim at the state level and under him falls the state excos as well as the party's hierarchy.

The Pakatan leader also told FMT that the lack of proper top-to-down communication has also resulted in the party being slow in putting up posters and distributing leaflets of its candidate Zaid Ibrahim.

“In fact, there are times when Zaid's schedules are also not informed on time by the party organisers, which leaves the party workers and supporters in the dark as to what's being planned for the day,” added the Pakatan leader. FreeMalaysiaToday....

Zaid’s wife takes to the stump in Hulu Selangor
    NEWS/COMMENTARIES

Tuesday, 20 April 2010 Super Admin

By Debra Chong, The Malaysian Insider

HULU YAM, April 20 — The daggers have been drawn against Datuk Zaid Ibrahim but the PKR candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election knows he can count on his wife to shield his back.

Datin Suliana Shamsuddin, Zaid’s wife for the past 31 years, is no shrinking violet.

Unlike most politicians’ wives who appear to prefer to support their husbands from the shade, the mother-of-three grown children has been boldly campaigning for her man all over the parliamentary seat the size of Malacca, without him.

“I don’t have a problem meeting people on my own,” the slender Suliana told to reporters after campaigning for her Kelantan-born husband in the tiny sneeze-and-you’ll-miss-it Chinese village here.

“It’s hard work but satisfying,” she said, recounting the long hours she now keeps due to the extensive travel into the semi-rural seat. Malaysiatoday....

Re: Hulu Selangor By-election - Is Kalamanathan an UMNO Candidate?

    Kamalanathan loses cool over criticisms
    By Clara Chooi

KUALA KUBU BARU, April 21 — As a public relations manager, P. Kamalanathan hardly loses his cool.

The calm exterior of the 44-year-old finally cracked yesterday when he was made to answer to allegations that his bid to win this Sunday’s Hulu Selangor by-election would be at the cost of his pride and identity as a member of the Indian community.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate was asked to comment about his overdependence on Umno leaders to win the by-election race and how he was seemingly willing to sacrifice the community’s struggles by kowtowing to his Muslim leaders.

This, Kamalanathan was told, was illustrated once when he kissed the hand of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and when he promised to deliver Hulu Selangor as a “gift” to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Since being named as a candidate, he has also defended Malay rights group Perkasa, a move that earned him plenty of criticism. TheMalaysiaInsider....

Re: Hulu Selangor By-election - MCA turns to Najib after Chinese shut-out

To be labelled as a "running dog" is very hard for a Chinese to accept. History will judge them.

MCA turns to Najib after Chinese shut-out

HULU SELANGOR, April 20 — The battle for Chinese votes in the Hulu Selangor by-election, especially in 13 Chinese new villages in the constituency, has intensified with both BN and PKR going all out to woo the voters.

While the perception is that the opposition has the edge when it comes to Chinese votes, it has not deterred the BN component parties from organising “ceramah” (talks) nightly, apart from daily walkabouts where the reception is often hostile.

With a few more days to go before polling, BN has intensified its campaign in the Chinese areas, with prime minister and BN chairman, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, expected to visit some of the 13 Chinese new villages in Kuala Kubu Baharu, Rasa, Batang Kali, Ulu Yam, Kalumpang and Kerling.

“It’s not easy for us. Every time we enter a new village, we got scolded. Therefore, we have to improve our strategy by getting more leaders from the MCA divisions throughout the country to help us,” said a grassroots leader. TheMalaysiaInsider....
