BERSIH 2.0 RALLY: Baharuddin Ahmad's Death

Family say police responsible for Bersih death

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — The brother of Baharuddin Ahmad, who died yesterday after collapsing during the Bersih rally, has blamed the death on a “deliberate act of cruelty” by the police.

Kassim Ahmad, 72, told The Malaysian Insider his brother had died because he alledged that the police had withheld medical aid from Baharudin after he collapsed while running away from tear gas and water cannon bombardment.

“[They] asked the police to help send him to hospital but they refused, so we waited for one-and-a-half hours before the van came,” he said.

“A lot of people tried to revive him ... Had he been given oxygen, he would be alive today.”

Baharuddin was laid to rest at 12.55pm today in Lembah Keramat Muslim Burial Ground, surrounded by the same yellow T-shirts he had marched alongside just a day before.

He leaves behind a wife, two sons and one daughter.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had earlier absolved police of the death, saying there was no contact with the demonstrators and that Baharuddin had died due to ill health.

Kassim also expressed shock at the violence employed by police during yesterday’s mammoth rally, which he likened to war, but stressed that people should not be intimidated by force.

Baharuddin, 56, who died at Kuala Lumpur Hospital yesterday evening, was laid to rest at 12.55pm today at Lembah Keramat Muslim Burial Ground here just three kilometres from his home.

His hearse was escorted by the same yellow T-shirts he had marched alongside just a day before.

Baharuddin leaves behind his wife, Setiawangsa PKR division chief Rosni Malan, a daughter, 24, and two sons aged 22 and 19.

Kassim added that he was thankful for the presence of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders at Baharuddin’s wake and burial, including PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.

Also present were Bersih chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah.

“Have you ever seen the other party come to bury a normal person?” he asked.

“This is the most poignant burial I’ve ever experienced ... because it’s from the heart. All through sweat, all having walked together for miles.”

It is understood that PR is looking into possible legal action against the police for Baharuddin’s death.

BERSIH 2.0 RALLY: Baharuddin Ahmad's Death

    1. Man Died. - And This is one of its stories.

I'm helping a friend share his story out. The Photographer who took this photograph. -
He was right there when Baharuddin Ahmad collapsed.

Have a read. - A video will be out in due time.

The Photographer and The Storyteller of this man prefer to remain Anonymous until the courts have taken notice. From an Anonymous Source.

Baharuddin Ahmad,(second from left) aged 59 passed away today after being arrested by the police. I watched him fall into a seizure with his hands tied behind his back with police cable tie. For nearly 20 minutes we begged and pleaded for a knife or blade to tie him loose and for an ambulance or a car to get him to medical care and the police did nothing. They just stood there and watched and said it was not their business to have a blade to cut people open.

I only wonder if prompt action would have saved his precious life.

Let this man not be forgotten for he walked with us and had laid his life down for us and those who come after us in the belief that we would have a brighter and better future as a people.

I love this photo because it just reminds me of how jovial and candid he was even after being arrested. From the little time I spent walking in front of him photographing, it was his gentleness that spoke to me the most.

This is how I'd like to remember this hero. Its such a waste to see a life this beautiful disappear before my very eyes.

    Al Fatihah!

BERSIH 2.0 RALLY: Baharuddin Ahmad's Death

UMNO is up to their old tricks again. They never learn, thinking that the people cannot see through their schemes.

    Baharuddin family unhappy post-mortem delayed

By Yow Hong Chieh July 13, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — The family of Baharuddin Ahmad, who died during last weekend’s Bersih rally, is upset that his post-mortem report has been delayed and will only be released next month.

Eldest son Mohd Nasrul Baharuddin said he was told on Saturday the report would be ready in “four to five days” but was informed by Kuala Lumpur Hospital today that the document will only be issued in four to five weeks.

“What’s happening? The body’s been buried so what are they waiting for?” the 22-year-old told The Malaysian Insider.

“I hope the doctor will release the results because... I’d like to know why my father died.”

Baharuddin, 56, died at Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Saturday evening after collapsing near KLCC during the Bersih rally while running away from police tear gas and water cannon bombardment.

He was laid to rest at 12.55pm the next day at Lembah Keramat Muslim Burial Ground here, just three kilometres from his home.

Baharuddin leaves behind his wife, Setiawangsa PKR division chief Rosni Malan, his daughter, Dr Hamizar Baharuddin, 24, and sons Mohd Nasrul Baharuddin, 22, and Hadriyudin Baharuddin, 19.

His brother, Kassim Ahmad, 72, has blamed Baharuddin’s death on a “deliberate act of cruelty” by the police who allegedly withheld critical medical aid for 90 minutes.

“[They] asked the police to help send him to hospital but they refused, so we waited for one-and-a-half hours before the van came,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

“A lot of people tried to revive him ... Had he been given oxygen, he would be alive today.”

It is understood that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is looking into possible legal action against the police for Baharuddin’s death and other alleged brutalities during Saturday rally for free and fair elections.
