Wee: ‘Sick’ MAS signed contracts worth millions

KUALA LUMPUR: National carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was supposedly “bleeding” when it entered into procurement contracts amounting to RM794.73 million.

And Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong wants the MAS bosses to give an explanation why the “very sick” patient was able to spend so much money.

Listing out several recent agreements MAS allegedly entered with several companies, Wee today questioned if these contracts were really needed or were they merely contributing to the “wastage” or “leakages” of MAS.

These agreements included a RM15.7million contract with media agency Ogilvy & Mather, a RM16.303 million deal with Starcomm, a RM10.88 million contract with PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory, Axon Solution Sdn Bhd (RM21.836 million), Formis Computer Sdn Bhd (RM3.7 million), communications company Chimera Brand Relation Sdn Bhd (RM450,000), and Kumpulan SF Powertech (RM10.833 million).

Wee also questioned the contracts involving three A330 aircraft amounting to RM715 million.

“Silence is no longer an option. The trio – (MAS chairman) Md Nor Yusof, (MAS Group CEO) Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, (MAS Group deputy CEO) Mohammed Rashdan Yusof – must clarify and account for all of these transactions.

“Instead of being transparent about what the trio has been doing in MAS, they are running around to find out who leaked all this information.

“Are the above A330 aircraft from Airbus? From which source did MAS lease or buy the aircraft from? Was it from [AirAsia CEO] Tony Fernandes?” Wee said at the Parliament lobby.

“The total sum of the above procurement contracts amounted to a whopping RM794.73 million! Allowances for MAS staff were cut to the bone but the appointments of consultants like PlaneConsult, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young and others went on unchecked at the time when MAS was bleeding,” he said.

Wee also said that the Finance Ministry must immediately hold a thorough investigation to prevent more cases of conflict of interest and leakages.

Yesterday, he also called for investigation on possible conflict of interest in MAS’ decision to engage PlaneConsult when its chairman, Connor McCarthy, is also a co-founder and a director of AirAsia.

MAS recorded a loss of RM2.5 billion earlier this year, prompting Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to review the share swap deal between the national carrier and AirAsia last August.
