    You are about to join 100,000 of us gathering in homes, places of worship, on campuses and in the streets to train and prepare ourselves for non-violent direct action.

    This spring we are joining together to reclaim our country through action, one neighborhood at a time.
    This training takes less than 1 hour to complete - and you don't have to finish it all at once. You’ll tell the story of how you’ve been impacted by the 1% economy, learn how we got here, and get the tools you need to plan an action in your own community this spring.

    What will we cover in this module?


    The Power of Non-violent Direct Action: This lesson features the video “Voice For Change,” a short history of non-violent direct action in the United States. From the Boston Tea Party to the abolition of slavery, from women’s suffrage to civil rights and environmental protection, direct action has been a critical part of every major social change in our country’s history. What is our generation’s responsibility now? How will we improve our families’ lives and save our economy and our democracy from the greed of a few?

    The 99% Spring is only the latest chapter in the book non-violent direct action in the United States. Our history is one where the promise of democracy and the challenge of inequality have been consistently in tension. Learn from what others have done before us when they faced unfathomable odds. The next chapter is ours to write!


    2Preparing Ourselves for Action 12 Min




    The first step of preparing for action is preparing ourselves individually. non-violent direct action surfaces deep underlying tensions so we can all see what’s going on. But surfacing those tensions can create conflict. Responding to conflict with non-violent discipline is an emotional and physical skill set we can each learn and practice. This lesson provides an introduction to that skill set.

    What will we cover in this module?

    An Exercise in Preparing for Non-violent Direct Action: Effective non-violent direct action requires intentionality and choice. We begin by thinking intentionally about how we want to act as we enter a situation of conflict. No matter what happens we can always choose how we will speak, move and engage with others. Watch others as they respond to conflict instinctually, then with more intentionality. Then try practicing this at home!

    Personal Tools and Tips Preparing for Non-violent Direct Action: Our choices in action should always reflect our values. Here are some basic tips for engaging in disciplined non-violent direct action.

    3Planning for Action 9 Min


    This spring tens of thousands of us will plan for and engage in non-violent direct action to challenge the status quo where a few in the 1% control both our economy and our democracy. We’re counting on you to step up and help lead or participate in actions this spring. That requires planning and practice, so we’ll give you some tips and tools here for building a strategic, effective action.



    What will we cover in this module?

    Planning Your Strategy: In the first video section of this lesson, you will learn how to plan to stand up for yourself with others by directly confronting, disrupting, or disobeying situations and institutions that you find morally unjust. You will also learn how a strategy is of the utmost importance when entering into non-violent direct action.

    Plan Your Goals: In this exercise you will identify your campaign and goals, then consider different strategies to organize your resources into power. With these in mind, you will then list some direct action tactics you may consider using as a part of your strategy.

    Planning Your Action: The second video section of this lesson will teach you how to prepare to take non-violent direct action based on your goals and interests, whether they are directed against large banks, corrupt politicians, environmentally damaging corporations, or others. What will your direct action look like, feel like, sound like, and what will be the demand? What type of action would create opportunity for others?

    Plan Your Tactics: Once you have thought over the different strategies you would use to pursue your goal, use this exercise to plan a real action that you can invite others to join you in as a part of this strategy, considering different targets, locations, and the various roles in your campaign’s structure.

    4Core Lessons of Non-Violent Direct Action 13 Min


    Ok, we all know what the 1% economy looks like. But what would an economy look like that works for all of us? We can’t just fight against the past, we have to fight for the future! What would your ideal community look like? And how would you defend it against attack?




    What will we cover in this module?

    Intro: We’re not just fighting the 1% economy, we’re working to build an economy that will work for all of us. What values should shape that economy?

    Your Values: This section of the lesson will feature an exercise where you describe the values most important to you and your community.

    America 2020: Creating a new economy requires imagination and leadership--if you and your neighbors don’t imagine a new economy for your community based on our shared values, who will?

    What is Your Ideal Community?: Draw it out and share it with your friends and family to see what others think.

    Choose to Act: What if someone in the 1% came in to destroy your ideal community with new developments, foreclosures, or fracking? How would you respond? There are four different types of action we can collectively take, including protesting, acts of non-cooperation, strategic intervention and creative solutions.

Through our unique stories we reveal the ties that bind us together, discovering the courage and solidarity to take action now.

    Tying It Together: After you have taken some time to write and share your own story, discover the broader themes that tie our stories together.

    Lesson 7: What Happened to Our Economy? 28 Min


    Let’s take a look at the history of the American economy over the last 40 years to understand the of our current economy. The economy we live in now was created by a series of individual and institutional choices. What choices were made and by whom? What choices could we make differently now to create an economy that works for all of us?





    What will we cover in this module?

    The 1% Economy: The first video of this lesson will feature an extended trailer of the documentary Heist - Who Stole the American Dream?, which shows the story of what has been happened to the American economy over the last 40 years. This will also help you better understand the 1%, and how they have used their economic influence to control our democracy as well as our economy.

    The 1% Strategy: We didn’t get here by accident. A few in the 1% have had a strategy for the last 40 years to attack workers, attack our democracy and divide and conquer. See how they did it.
