    Kugan Died in Police Custody

    Something's brewing here.

First the police said the suspect died while drinking water. Could it be water-boarding?

Now deputy ministers are being quizzed. Deputy Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department T Murugiah and SK Devamany were present at the morgue.

Public trust in the police is so low that the family barged into the morque to examine the bodies themselves. I suppose that is wise. Otherwise, the body could disappear into the Klang River.

Another body did and the case is still not resolved. I believe it was filed under X-files.

Police to quiz two deputy ministers over dead suspect
    UPDATED

PETALING JAYA, Jan 22 — The police are expected to record the statements of two deputy ministers in connection with the incident at the Serdang Hospital mortuary where the body of a suspected car thief was alleged to have been tampered with.

Selangor CPO DCP Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said a post-mortem showed that A. Kugan died of liquid in the lungs. He was being questioned at the Taipan police station in Subang Jaya when he died.

Kugan’s family and several other people alleged stormed the hospital morgue on Tuesday where Kugan’s body was being kept, removed his shirt and took photographs.

It was reported that Kugan was arrested on Jan 15 on suspicion of being involved in the theft of luxury cars. He was taken to the Taipan police station on Tuesday when he suddenly collapsed and died while being questioned.

Meanwhile Bernama reported that Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar has confirmed following the post-term, police will investigate the death and assured that there “will be no cover-up in the investigation". He hopes that the family and the general public will be patient.

He was speaking to reporters after a launch of a road safety campaign at the Kajang-Seremban Highway today.

“We regretted that the family and members of the public barged into the Serdang Hospital mortuary where the body was kept, yesterday.”

Charles Santiago: Government Must Act Urgently to Stop Custodial Killings

Government Must Act Urgently to Stop Custodial Killings

    Press Statement by Charles Santiago

I strongly denounce the action of the police officers who were involved in beating up Kugan Ananthan, resulting in his death. It is disturbing to note such barbaric behaviour among some members of the police force.

But what is even more shocking is the fairy tale spun by Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar who has been reported saying Kugan had died of breathing difficulties.

Khalid should be ashamed of himself for trying to protect his officers who had caused grievous bodily harm to the 22-year-old man.

I watched the video recording of Kugan taken at the mortuary. The footage revealed severe marks on his body, deep cuts on his wrists and bruises on his legs. Blood was oozing from his nose.

HINDRAF – Stop the crucifixion of the Malaysian Indian

SUHAKAM should come into the picture. This is a clear-cut case of police brutality and cover-up.

Of course, it is going to be a waste of time since their real acronym is SHAM (Suruhanjaya Hak Awam Malaysia).

Re: Kugan Died in Police Custody

Watch how events unfold and spin out of control.

The Selangor CPO Khalid Baker will have to resign to take responsibility.

Eventually, the IPCMC will have to be implemented.

    By Neville Spykerman

He said the body has already been surrendered to the family and it's their right to get a second post-mortem done.

"Why should we object?" he said, when told that Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar had refused to authorise a second post-mortem and had told the family to get court order, it they wanted one.

Amnesty International Malaysia: Govt must investigate police torture claims

This issue is going international now.

Amnesty International Malaysia is coming into the picture.

This is coming up soon. Time for Malaysia to be cited as a human-rights violator.

Malaysia is scheduled to be reviewed by the Human Rights Council of the United Nations on 11 February 2009. Under this procedure the human rights situations in all UN member states are reviewed on a periodic basis.

Government must investigate police torture claims

    Friday, 23 January 2009
The Malaysian authorities must initiate an independent, impartial, prompt and effective investigation into the death of 22-year-old Kugan Ananthan, Amnesty International said today, amid reports that he may have been tortured in police custody.

Damage Control & Diversion of Attention

    1. Damage Control:

    Detainee's death: 11 policemen removed
    Jan 24, 09 12:21pm

Police have removed 11 constables and lance corporals from the Subang Taipan police station where the case of A Kugan, a detainee, who died in their custody, was reclassified as murder yesterday with immediate effect.

.......We expect to complete the investigations within three days.

    2. Diversion:

In Kuching yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan said an in-depth investigation would be carried out.

He said this was despite the initial post-mortem which indicated that Kugan had died of pulmonary edema or fluid accumulation in the lungs. (Cover-up?)

Musa, however, condemned the actions of a mob which forced its way into the Serdang Hospital mortuary on Tuesday night, evicted the hospital staff and locked themselves in for two hours.

"The mob incident shouldn't have happened in the first place.

Some solace for Kugan’s family, but human rights record still on the line

Some solace for Kugan’s family, but human rights record still on the line

The AG’s decision was welcomed by some civil groups, who say the surprise recapitulation gives Kugan’s family some measure of justice.

But Malaysia’s human rights record is still on the line. And others remain unconvinced, asking if it was necessary for the government to wait until a life was taken before it acted …

MIC & MCA stepping up the pressure

Useful diversion from the troubles arising from KT and the problems in UMNO.

MIC wants independent probe into Kugan’s murder

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 — The MIC wants an independent committee of eminent persons to investigate detainee A. Kugan's death under police custody, whereas the MCA wants a second autopsy to uncover the actual cause of death.
