When you are in the business of protesting, every new protest has to be bigger than the last one. Otherwise, it will be deemed a failure.

WILL Najib really put in reforms? Bersih 4.0 a "SURE GUARANTEE"

According to the newly-minted Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih) chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, street rallies demanding for electoral reform might return for its fourth instalment if Election Commission fails to deliver on the much demanded reforms that have been put forward thus far.

“Reforms such as the 15 demands submitted to the Election Commission in 2011; the parliamentary select committee’s 22 points recommendation; the final recommendations from Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) Sabah, need to be implemented immediately without fear or favour,” Maria Chin was quoted saying by The Malay Mail.

“And let this also be a promise – if reforms are not in place, Bersih 4.0 is a sure guarantee,” she added.

Maria Chin took over from Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreevenasan and national laureate A Samad Said by winning the post uncontested.

One of the main tasks outlined soon after concluding the committee’s election last weekend was to hand over a petition to Yang diPertuan Agong in January 2014 calling for the resignation of all seven commissioners of the Election Commission.

Maria Chin said the next batch of EC members must comprise people of “high integrity, respectable, independent and unbiased.”

She also demanded that redelineation exercise must be halted until a new EC board is appointed and electoral rolls are cleansed.

Meanwhile, surgeon Ahmad Farouk was elected as the committee vice-chairperson and Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) executive officer Masjaliza Hamzah was elected as treasurer.
