The much awaited Bersih People's Tribunal report investigating irregularities of the GE13 is delayed due to more time required by panel members says a Bersih steering committee member.
PETALING JAYA: Electoral reform NGO, Bersih, has delayed the long awaited release of its People’s Tribunal findings and report.

Steering committee member, Maria Chin Abdullah said that the judges required more time to ensure that a quality report is produced.

“We do not want to rush as we are focusing on every aspect of the investigations,” Maria Chin told FMT.

The People’s Tribunal, convened to investigate irregularities reported to have taken place during the GE13 featured five local and foreign panelists. The Tribunal was held from Sept 18 to Sept 22 and included the calling of ‘witnesses’ from all over the country.

The panel was chaired by Yash Pal Ghai, a reputable expert in constitutional law. Other international panel members included Ramlan Surbakti, former deputy chairman of the Indonesian Election Commission and Kraisak Choonhavan, president of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC).

Malaysian panelists included lawyer and former administrative and diplomatic officer from Ministry of Foreign Affairs Azzat Kamaludin, former associate professor from the Faculty of Economics and Administration, University of Malaya Dr Mavis Puthucheary and Council of Churches of Malaysia general secretary Rev Dr Hermen Shastri.

Among issues raised at the Tribunal were, misuse of government machinery, money politics, bribery, intimidation, poor security of ballot boxes and concerns regarding tabulation and vote counting at the polling stations.

Besides making its findings public, the panel also intends to put forward suggested recommendations for improvements to be implemented in the electoral process for GE14.

Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah says that the tribunal will announce in January when the report will be ready.
PETALING JAYA: The Bersih tribunal report on the irregularities reported during the 13th general election will only be released next year because the panelists have too much information to process.

The panel completed its session on Sept 22 and promised to deliver its report within three months but had not done so.

Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) would only know in January when the report would be completed.

The NGO, which champions free and fair elections, established a tribunal to investigate the alleged irregularities that occurred during the polls.

Maria said the panelists needed time because there was too much information to process.

“It will take time. A lot of issues were brought up and there are lot of documents and witness statements to be processed,” she said.

The panel was chaired by Yash Pal Ghai, an expert in constitutional law from Kenya. Other international panel members included Ramlan Surbakti, former deputy chairman of the Indonesian Election Commission and Kraisak Choonhavan, president of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus.

Local panelists included a former diplomatic officer from the Foreign Affairs Ministry Azzat Kamaludin, former University Malaya associate professor Mavis Puthucheary and Council of Churches of Malaysia secretary general Rev Hermen Shastri.
