PAS's spiritual adviser even connected his ailments as “kifaarat” (payback to cleanse his sins) for the mistakes he had made when administering Kelantan.

"I am sorry for my mistakes when I was the Kelantan Menteri Besar.

"Perhaps my ailments are what Allah wants. To cleanse whatever sins I may have committed," the state's longest serving menteri besar said during dawn prayers at the Pulau Melaka mosque next to his house.

Nik Aziz was the Kelantan menteri besar from 1990 until 2013, when he stepped down from his position after 23 years. He was replaced by his deputy Datuk Ahmad Yakub.

Nik Aziz's departure signalled a chaotic time for Kelantan's state administration, with internal criticism coming from PAS and Pakatan Rakyat.

His health had also deteriorated with constant trips to the Universiti Sains Malaysia hospital, which is located not far from his home.

His spirit, however, never wavered and he had been consistent in providing moral support to his party and Pakatan.

When he was in good health, Nik Aziz regularly visited his office in Kota Darul Naim, the Tok Guru Thinking Institute which was set up by Kelantan's new administration after his retirement.

The institute was set up to ensure that Nik Aziz's thoughts would continue to be heard and practiced even though he was no longer leading the state.
