Ismail Sabri’s remark an admission of BN’s gerrymandering, DAP MP says

Yesterday, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic) said that Malay support for Umno has risen due to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. ― File picKUALA LUMPUR, April 10 ― DAP’s Zairil Khir Johari today said that a Cabinet minister’s recent remark on former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s alleged meddling in 1999’s general election was proof of Putrajaya’s gerrymandering in elections.
Zairil responded to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s previous comment that Dr Mahathir was forced to turn many Malay seats into mixed seats during his tenure as the prime minister for the general election.
“This is not a surprising remark, but when uttered by a federal minister and Umno’s supreme council member with no shame or guilt on how a supposedly independent body (Election Commission ― EC) has been abused by the government to manipulate the country’s elections, this is a heavy implication,” he said.
“Ismail Sabri’s admission is a proof that EC is Umno and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) political tool to ensure they maintained their power.”
The Bukit Bendera assemblyman further said this meant BN’s position as the government was “legally and morally invalid” and EC was not qualified to run its role as an electoral body.
Zairil also said that the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister proved that Umno did not have Malay’s interest in its heart since they would do anything to keep themselves in power, even if it meant turning to more non-Malay voters.
Yesterday, Ismail Sabri said that Malay support for Umno has risen due to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He contrasted this to when Dr Mahathir was PM, when Malays had shunned Umno and Barisan Nasional was forced to rely on non-Malay support to win the 1999 general election.
“As Umno president, Najib brought about change to Umno and support for Umno increased in the last general election.
“This is different from what happened in 1999,” news portal Malaysiakini quoted Ismail Sabri saying.
Najib has been facing growing pressure from his detractors to step down, particularly from Dr Mahathir.
In recent remarks, Dr Mahathir said he could no longer remain silent and that the days for diplomacy have long passed, adding he will now push for Najib’s resignation openly.

EC Dismisses Claim Of Gerrymandering Under Mahathir's Premiership

PUTRAJAYA, April 10 (Bernama) -- The Election Commission today dismissed an allegation that it had altered Malay-majority constituencies into mixed-community constituencies when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the prime minister.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said the redelineation of electoral boundaries adhered to a legal process and the EC did not have the authority to change constituencies to suit the needs of any individual.

Any allegation of gerrymandering was merely an assumption because the constitution provided for feedback, enquiries, meetings and discussions, he told reporters after announcing the dates for nomination and polling in the Rompin parliamentary by-election.

"The EC also does not have the authority to change the constituency of any voter because that depends on the address on the identity card," he said.

Umno Supreme Council member and Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had alleged that Dr Mahathir had redelineated electoral boundaries to turn Malay-majority constituencies into mixed-community constituencies, thus making it difficult for UMNO to win seats.

    MEDIA STATEMENT (10 April 2015)

    EC HAS ALWAYS SERVED UMNO/BN

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (BERSIH 2.0) sees UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s gerrymandering accusation against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday as proof that the Election Commission (EC) is a “lackey” of the party.

Yesterday, Ismail, who is also the agriculture and agro‑based industry minister, accused Mahathir of undermining Malay constituencies by making them mixed constituencies during the premier's 22 year rule from 1981 to 2003.

BERSIH 2.0, however, is not in anyway surprised by the revelation as there has always been an UMNO-BN policy of using government agencies to continue their undemocratic rule.

Furthermore, the reply of EC Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusuf today that Malay-majority seats are now mixed seats as alleged by Ismail Sabri was not done through gerrymandering is also confusing.

This is not the first time Tan Sri Aziz and the EC have flip-flopped on issues like this. The EC will never take responsibility for any mistakes they have made. Until now, the issue of the indelible ink used in GE13 still hasn't been answered nor has the EC been investigated over the ink's failures.
Abdul Aziz's weak and lame reply that it was done by voters changing their constituencies, which is out of EC's hands showed that the EC has never and will never be independent as long as UMNO is in charge.

This development might mean that gerrymandering will again be a tactic used in the current delineation exercise to pre-determine the outcome of the 14th general election as UMNO and other major BN affiliates are embroiled in crises with the public support to the Prime Minister and UMNO president are in their all time low.

BERSIH 2.0 vows not to let this happens and will continue our campaign to educate all voters and Malaysian citizens of their rights. If the EC insists on attempting to subvert the Constitution, they must be prepared to defend their actions in court.

    KENYATAAN MEDIA 10 APRIL 2015
