    May 13

For years, May 13 was only spoke about in whispers except by UMNO who regularly brought it up to threaten the Chinese of Malaysia. What really happened then?

In the Rat Race Part V - Ch 3 (A Rat’s Look At Malayan History:), we said: Know your history. Otherwise you may be condemned to repeat it.

Raja Petra Kamaruddin (RPK) has kindly taken the time to explain what happened during May 13, 1969. Here it is:

    May 13 Part 1
    May 13 Part 2
    May 13 Part 3

Basically, it was just a power-grab by one group of the Ruling Class against another group. They played on the emotions of racial hatred and envy of one group against another. Those poor people who died in the pogrom were just collateral damage.

To really get to the bottom of this sad episode will require the setting up of a Truth Commission. That will have to await Anwar's 916.

    Re: MAY 13

There is a book with the same title "MAY 13" by Dr Kua Kia Soong and published by Suaram based on his research of official documents declassified by the British Government. Good and factual, all Malaysians should read and know the real culprits who sparked of the bloody massacre and put a black mark in our nation's history. The truth must be told and... remembered... just in case somebody else try to pull the same freaking trick again.

May 13 Symbols Frames and Networks Studying Ethnic War in Philippines

The strategy of pitting one race against another was not confined to Malaysia alone. This study makes a comparison with the situation in the Philippines. There are chilling similarities. The Ruling Class use the same tactics worldwide.

The Social Contract & May 13; History of Race Relations in Malaysia

    3 articles here.

    1. The Social Contract and May 13 by Joe Fernandez 16 May 08,
    2. Social Contract: No such thing by Rahmah Ghazali 11 May 08,
    3. A History of Race Relations in Malaysia

A less heavy look at May 13 and its relationship with the social contract, which by the way, is a bucketload of processed hay dreamed up by the UMNOCrats to justify their rape of the national resources.

May 13 Symbolic Politics and ethnic conflict in Malaysia and the Philippines

This is a very interesting research paper by Prof Stuart J. Kaufman, Satoshi Machida and Yu Wang, Apr 2006.

It is a study of two ethnic crises, one in Malaysia and the other in the Philippines.

Page 19 and 20 has a very good theoretical explanation for the events during May 13 itself which sounds very plausible.

DAP and Gerakan, in particular, should read this document carefully to understand how they contributed to the tragedy and to know how they should behave in future. Among all the political parties, DAP have the greatest potential (and propensity) to play into the hands of UMNO to trigger unrest. They have in the past (wittingly or unwittingly) been the foil used by UMNO to play up the fears of the Malays. Their current crop of old leaders still tend to exhibit that tendency. Happily, the younger leaders don't. So, if we can hang on for 5 more years until the older generation retires, we can then breath easy.

Let us hope that power (I am pleased to note that one of them has been more circumspect in his ways after the Perak MB incident. ) has moderated their behaviour and that they will be more careful in future. We do not want another May 13 and we do not want to give the desperate politicians an excuse to exercise it. Occasionally, we have to whack these people to keep them in line.

How to interpret political events? Watch the actions, ignore the words.

Ask who are the beneficiaries, in other words - follow the money.
The perpetrators are usually the beneficiaries.

    Question: Who started May 13?

The answer to that is found in the answer to the question:

Which group of politicians benefited from May 13?

Which group have been using the threat of May 13 to cow the populace?

Here are two different viewpoints, one that matches quite closely to the ideas explained in the Rat Race and one which has a lot of words designed to confuse the reader..... Take your pick.

    Anwar rubbishes 1Malaysia

Datuk Nizar, the newly-elected MP for Bukit Gantang accused the dominant Malay party of creating a bogeyman out of the May 13 1969 incident.

Umno is still using the May 13 incident as a tool to scare Malaysians,” he thundered.

Nizar claimed that the residual fear from the incident was based on fiction, created by the ruling parties to continue the colonial tactic of divide-and-conquer to exert control over the populace.

Umno tells people: ‘Our closest enemies are the Chinese’,” he said, to demonstrate what he claimed was the party’s tactics in inciting hatred among the different races.

He alleged the other race-based components of the BN coalition adopted similar measures.

He acknowledged that even he had been duped by the colonialist scare tactics in the past “but no more”.

The 13th May incident was sparked deliberately by Umno,” More…
