Liow wins MCA presidency, Wee is new No. 2

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 21): Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai is the new MCA president while his running mate, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, won the deputy president's post.

Liow, 52, defeated Datuk Gan Ping Sieu in a closely contested race, triumphing by a slim majority of 186 votes.

Liow garnered 1,186 or 51% of the votes, while Gan secured 1,000 or 43% of the votes.

Gan was seen as the candidate backed by outgoing president Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek.

The third candidate, former president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, obtained only 160 or 7% of the votes.

For the deputy president's post, Wee secured 1,408 or 60% of the votes to beat Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai by 481 votes.

Lim, who was Gan's running mate, received 927 or 40% of the votes.

The supporters of Liow and Wee gathered at the San Choon Hall in the party headquarters before the results were officially announced by the assembly speaker Yi Pooi Hong.

Just minutes before the official results were announced, Liow was seen ushered into the voting hall with loud cheers and chants of his name.

Gan, who was following behind, offered his congratulations and was invited to sit between Liow and Wee as the official announcement was made.

Wee was also seen diligently marking the results in a spread sheet.

Ong and Lim were no where to be seen.

Meanwhile, in the vice president contest, Datuk Lee Chee Leong (1,642 votes), Datuk Hou Kok Chung(1,475), Datuk Chua Tee Yong(1,343) and Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun(1,230) were declared the winners.

Chew is the second elected female VP in the history of MCA. The first elected female VP was Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen.

Those who lost in the VP race were Datuk Wee Jeck Seng(1,199), Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha(775), Lee Wei Kiat (721), Datuk Chong Itt Chew (685) and Leong Yong Kong (286).
Meanwhile, the 25 elected central committee members comprised 11 belonging to Liow's camp and 14 belonging to the Chee Leong-Tee Yong team, which is pro Chua.

The 11 in Liow's camp are Datuk Toh Chin Yaw( 1,771 votes), Datuk Ong Ka Chuan ( 1,525), Kong Sing Chu (1,279), Chai Kim Sen (1,262), Boey Chin Gan (1,255), Tan Cher Puk (1,219), Datuk Hoh Khai Mun (1,204), Yoo Wei How (1,204), Tan Teik Cheng(1,175), Datuk Chuah Poh Khiang(1,152) and Ti Lian Ker (1,13.

The 14 pro-Chua winners are Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon who obtained the highest number of votes (2,023), Koh Nai Kwong(1,773), Lua Choon Hann(1,601), Jason Teoh Sew Hock (1,455), Datuk Gan Tian Loo (1,330), Chin Tung Leong (1,319), Ooi Siew Kim(1,250), Datuk Lim Chin Fui (1,245), Datuk Dr Lee Hong Tee( 1,23, Ooi Eyan Hian (1,205), Ei Kim Hock(1,185), Datuk Tan Chin Meng (1,139), Por Choo Chor (1,123) and Ng Chok Sin (1,172)

A total of 2,352 central delegates cast their votes to elect the new leadership to lead the party in the next three years.
